Made the switch to windows 8

First off, if you’re not ready to make the leap to Windows 8 as your primary OS, let me point you to this article to get you started using it as a dual-boot system… How To Seamlessly Dual Boot Windows 7 And Windows 8 the Easy Way

That said… I made the switch today to using Windows 8 on my laptop as the only OS.

So far? In general, I’m happy with it. There’s a few things that suck… The Kindle client doesn’t offer all of the books for Windows 8, which seems weird. Especially since one of the books I tried to read was a relatively new one (The Odd Thomas Books 1-4 omnibus).

In addition, the Windows Mail client is completely useless. And apparently, there is no way to share something you find in Bing Travel with your Facebook Timeline… Which is an oversight that is unforgivable in a “Connected” OS like Win8.

Good things I’ve found? I like the Messenger client. It’s a nice alternative to using the Facebook messenger, which I’ve never really liked. I also really like the integration with Xbox Live. I’m looking forward to seeing what MS does with that in the future.

Overall, I feel like Windows 8 is still a bit raw. There are things missing in some of the basic apps that I just expect in a modern OS – like the ability to share to Facebook from nearly any point in the OS.

I’m not discounting it yet though. I think with a little time, I’ll get used to the new look and feel.

If you’re making the switch to Windows 8 some time soon, you should definitely check out one of the upcoming State of Dot Net classes… a free course presented by CODE Consulting. We’ll provide you with everything you need to know about the current state of Windows, .Net, Microsoft, and the future of the Microsoft Ecosystem, from an unbiased perspective.

If you’re a programmer, and you’re interested in programming on the WinRT framework… Take a look at our classes. In particular, a day of Windows 8 with Markus Egger!

Stay tuned for more of my experiences!
